'GARBAGEGATE' is more than just a financial scandal

Sun 22nd Jun 2008

The massive overcharging of street traders who work on Portobello Market is more than simply a financial scandal - it is, for many, the final straw in a battle to preserve and protect the iconic market. Local people are beginning to digest the implications of the revelation that market traders - some of whom have been 'market families' for as long as a century - have been severely over-charged by the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea for the last 17 years.

Holland Park School sell-off decision meeting set for 26 June

Fri 20th Jun 2008

Kensington & Chelsea Borough Council have finally announced that the meeting of the Major Planning Development Committee to decide on the Holland Park School sell-off will indeed take place on 26th June at 6.30pm in the Council Chamber. The local Liberal Democrats have written to the Council to complain about the short notice period given to residents about something as important as this meeting. Residents have only been informed of the meeting four working days in advance, and any submissions for consideration must arrive by Wednesday 25th June, leaving barely two working days to prepare any paperwork.

Holland Park School plans blasted by Council's own experts

Further to our previous news, the Borough's Major Planning Committee did NOT meet on 22nd May to consider whether to allow the Tory Council to sell off the playing fields at Holland Park School, the Borough's ONLY comprehensive school. Absolute last chance to protest at the Council's sell off of school land to luxury developers

Mon 12th May 2008

On 22nd May, the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea's plans to sell off playing space in Holland Park School to luxury property developers go before the Major Planning committee. Any letters received by the council before this date will be considered by the committee so there is still time to write in - but only just. The plans will see the money raised from the luxury development being used to demolish the entire school and rebuild it on a smaller site.

Brompton By-Election shows that Lib Dems are now the main opposition to Tories in Royal Borough

Sat 3rd May 2008

Amid the cheering emanating from the Conservatives at the count for the Brompton by-election in Kensington, another group of political activists were doing some celebrating of their own. The Liberal Democrats, who came second, polled almost twice as many votes in the ward as they did in 2006 and kept Labour in a poor third place.

Quote of the Week

"This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can."
